Flash! (A Crash Course on Professional Presentations)
Ever wonder how buildings were created? Or how a person landed a life-changing deal with a client, all the way to the bank? How about gaining more funding for a research project?... Before all of these concrete entities were produced, a conceptualized vision started them off, then a series of making it convincing, appealing, and compelling. You would think that a person who is just a technical engineer, or a number crunching finance officer, or a simple researcher, could not pull that kind of pitch; However, the world sees their results differently. Pulling off a remarkable technical presentation is the answer, to those who aspire to see their visions come into reality. Staging a professional presentation from an expert, is now becoming more common, and it is essential that one would know the basics, and foundation of doing it correctly, before forging ahead. It is best to know, how to approach: 1) the content; 2) the audience; and 3) the delivery;
1) Content
It is essential that a speaker knows what his or her topic is; without the focused idea of the topic, your presentation will definitely struggle. The most important of all, is to find out what is to be presented, and establish the objectives right away. Should research be done, especially about the technical aspects, and process of whatever should be explained? The answer there is a definite yes; However, too much information, and presented research, will definitely throw off the audience. Include the essentials, as it will be the core of the entire presentation. Also establishing the need, for whatever product or service, developed in the field, for the audience, will be a big plus, for those in attendance.
2) Audience
People show up to learn, and fully engage with the speaker, as their interests lie with the presentation. Take into consideration, that not all of the audience members, however, will be familiar with the jargons of the technical field. Although this a professional presentation, keep in mind that not everyone will be an expert. Be prepared to accommodate the learning preferences of the participants. The use of layman’s terms should also be considered, as it will help everyone grasps the ideas being presented. It is imperative to see how the attendees will use the presentation, and in order for them to remember, it must be memorable.
3) Delivery
Some technical presentations come off too boring, as the speaker does little to engage. As you present, remember the essentials of communicating the message to everyone. There isn’t a need to put too much text and content on the slides if not necessary. As the content and audience are locked-in, be sure that your delivery of the powerpoint presentation itself is worthwhile, and engaging enough to sustain interests. Appearances will make a difference, and the neatness of the presentation materials, is an added plus to pulling everything off.
A professional presentation, doesn’t have to be too boring, or too specialized, if these aspects are considered. Of course, it does take effort and practice, but given all the aforementioned aspects, if one were to be interested, in giving a specialized presentation, it is truly possible.
